Stars: Introduction

This page is an introduction to the capabilities of AstroGrid which are relevant to the study of stars. Under Stars: Example Cases you will find some basic example cases describing simple problems such as retrieving spectra using AstroGrid and then fitting emission line profiles using the SPLAT (the Spectral Line Analysis Tool). Under Stars: Tutorials you will find demonstrations of how to access/query specific data sets such as the IPHAS Galactic Plane Survey and the Carlsberg Meridian Catalogue.

Stars: Example Cases

The following is a list of case studies which are used to demonstrate how to perform some basic tasks in the study of stars. Click on the appropriate link to read the full case study.

  • AU Mic Spectral Line Fitting AU Mic is a type of variable star called a flare star. The "flare" activity can be detected in the strength of the Lyman-alpha 1215 Angstrom line. In this example case, the AstroScope will be used to search for HST spectra which will then be sent to SPLAT. Within SPLAT, the spectra are normalised and a strength of the Lyman-alpha line is measured by fitting a Gaussian profile to it. Click the title to view this example case.
Stars: Tutorials

The following is a list of tutorials which demonstrate how to access/query services which are relevant to the study of stars.
